Tools & Deliverables
Here, we present some of the research tools that were developed in our previous studies.
WLAQ (Workers’ Living Activity-time Questionnaire)
- Research tools
WLAQ is a questionnaire to evaluate a workers’ sleeping time, working time, sitting time across different domains (during working, during commuting, leisure time on a working day and a non-workday), and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF). The questionnaire may be used for epidemiological studies. Data on the questionnaire’s validity and reliability have been reported in previous papers.

JNIOSH step test (JST1) explainer video
- Video for measurement
This video explains how to perform the JST. This is for a participants to see before the test. The JST is a test method used to easily measure a workers’ cardiorespiratory fitness. In the test, the heart rate is measured during a 3-minute step-up exercise and then during a 2-minute rest. These values are utilized to estimate value of maximum oxygen consumption (VO2max), which is an indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness. Data on the validity and reliability of the estimated values have been reported in the previous study. (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32812102/).
JNIOSH step test (JST1) practice video
- Video for measurement
This is a practice video for JST. The participants will undergo testing while watching this video.
J-HIAT explainer video
- Video for measurement
This is an explainer video for exercise developed to maintain and improve cardiorespiratory fitness in a time-efficient manner. This exercise was originally developed to train the heart muscle of astronauts in a safe and time-efficient manner.
J-HIAT practice video
- Exercise training tool
This is a J-HIAT practice video (15 minutes). J-HIAT originally developed as an exercise using a stationary bike, has been modified through joint research with Renaissance, Inc. into an exercise that does not require the use of a bike. Three instructors appear at each level. We hope you will give it a try.
J-WISE (JNIOSH Worker’s Interval Strength & balance Exercise) practical video
- Exercise training tool
This is a 15-minute exercise developed through joint research with Renaissance, Inc. to maintain and improve muscle strength and balance. In common with J-HIAT, its program consists of the following parts: warm-up (1 min.) ⇒ high-intensity (3 min.) ⇒ moderate-intensity (2 min.) ⇒ high-intensity (3 min.) ⇒ moderate-intensity (2 min.) ⇒ high-intensity (3 min.) ⇒ cool-down (1 min.). Two instructors appear at each level. We hope you will give it a try.
Stretching exercise (upper body) practice video
- Exercise training tool
This practice video introduces upper body stretching exercises that you can do at odd times in your daily life for a change during working hours or before and after exercise. We hope you will give it a try.
Stretching exercise (lower body) practice video
- Exercise training tool
This practice video introduces lower body stretching exercises that you can do at odd times in your daily life for a change during working hours or before and after exercise. We hope you will give it a try.
