Background

One of the most important issues in Japan is the declining birthrate and aging population, which has resulted in a reduced workforce. It is crucial for individuals to maintain their vitality and actively engage in work, regardless of age. This expectation is shared not only by the government but also by individuals and companies alike.
With the aim of addressing this issue and making a meaningful contribution, we are conducting research focused on workers’ fitness and physical activities from the perspective of physical and mental fitness science.

Research on workers’physical & mental fitness

We are considering workers’health issue from two viewpoints, i.e., “physical fitness (PF)” and “mental fitness (MF).” This concept emphasizes the importance of incorporating both physical and mental elements to protect ourselves against various exposure factors in the workplace. While there have been numerous studies on “PF”, research on “MF”, particularly in the field of occupational health, remains limited. To reduce workers’ health risks, we would like to include both PF and MF in our epidemiological and experimental studies.

Research on workers’physical activity

In response to the growing interest in physical activity, we are conducting research on workers’physical activity. Specifically, we focus on sedentary behavior, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), and physical activity paradox, to clarify the impact on health risks. We also aim to develop and evaluate innovative intervention strategies to improve the health of workers in a wide range of occupations.

Classification of physical activity
Physical activity is classified into four categories according to intensity (energy consumption).
What is MVPA (moderate-to-vigorous physical activity)?
MVPA is an abbreviation for moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, which refers to physical activity of 3 METs or more.
What is METs?
This is a unit of measurement that expresses the intensity of physical activity. One MET is defined as the energy used when resting or sitting still. For example, an activity that has a value of 3 METs means that your activity is three times the energy than you would if you were sitting still.
